After successful presentations at Wien Modern in Vienna, Galerija Alkatraz in Ljubljana, and at Dim in Belgrade, we are excited to announce the fourth showcase of the Sounding Spomenik project. This time, we invite you to Osmo/za in Ljubljana, where harpist Milana Zarić will perform a composition enriched with ambient recordings from the Memorial Park of Struggle and Victory in Čačak, Serbia. Located on a hill outside the city, this imposing mausoleum is a striking departure from the heroic symbols typical of post-war monuments. It features 620 stone griffins, whose iconography evokes the mythical themes of ancient Eastern civilizations. The work was completed in 1980 under the guidance of architect Bogdan Bogdanović.

The long-term Sounding Spomenik project examines anti-fascist monuments as acoustic spaces with remarkable sonic potential. Some of these structures possess unique acoustic properties due to the materials used and their hollow sections, which act as resonant chambers. Despite their prominence in Yugoslav architectural heritage and pop culture, these iconic monuments have yet to be thoroughly documented as acoustic spaces, and very little research has been conducted on their sonic environments.

A glimpse into this sonic heritage, captured through field recordings, will be presented at the solo concert by Milana Zarić. The event will be enriched with a live visualization by Lina Rica.

Program:

  • 20:00 – Video installation by László Juhász: Standing Still, Monument (arh. Živa Baraga in Janez Lenassi, Ilirska Bistrica)
  • 20:15 – Project presentation and discussion with the team: Milana Zarić (musician), Jernej Babnik Romaniuk (field recordist), László Juhász & Nataša Serec (curators, project producers)
  • 20:45 – Concert: performed by Milana Zarić, solo harp featuring multichannel field recordings by Jernej Babnik Romaniuk and live visualization by Lina Rica.
