Roscoffensis I/O
Miha Godec + Roscosmoe Lab

Roscoffensis I/O takes an in-depth look at the complex relationship and symbiosis between plants and animals, focusing in particular on the marine flatworm Symsagittifera roscoffensis; an animal-algae symbiosis that enables the worm to live fully off the photosynthetic activity of its microalgae symbionts, which it ingests but does not digest and keeps in its epidermis. Inspiration of the prospective scenario of a future “Homo Photosyntheticus” developed by evolutionary biologist Lynn Margulis, the Symsagittifera roscoffensis has become a model organism for research into the design of bioregenerative life support systems for space exploration. Roscoffensis I/O highlights the complexity of natural interdependencies and invites visitors to reconsider their own relationship with the natural environment, viewing it as a dynamic, living system.

With Roscoffensis I/O, Miha Godec and the Roscosmoe Lab invite visitors to examine animal-plant-machine interrelationships, and to reflect on the future of terrestrial life forms here and in outer space.

Miha Godec

Miha Godec (1988, SI) graduated in 2014 from the Academy of Arts of the University of Nova Gorica (UNG AU) and began his professional career as a photographer. During his studies, he perfected his knowledge at the Portuguese school ESAD (College of Art and Design). Godec already held many photographic and new media exhibitions, both at home and abroad. In addition to creating art installations, he also gives lectures in photography and virtual reality. He also independently carries out educational, scientific, and artistic workshops. Godec pays a lot of attention to the development of new media projects, in which he researches the consequences of anthropogenic impact on aquatic ecosystems, experimenting with water purification, and researching the sonification properties of water, at the intersections of art, science, and new technologies.

Roscosmoe Lab

Roscosmoe Lab at ART2M is an art & science platform that hosts or supports artists conducting researches in the field of marine biology and biodiversity. Roscosmoe is a transdisciplinary initiative in partnership with the Multicellular Marine Models laboratory of the Roscoff Marine Station (France). A major thread of the initiative is the design of research protocols involving the photosymbiotic worm Symsagittifera roscoffensis as a potential biological model to apply in space research. The space mission Roscosmoe connects marine biology, space ecology, design, anthropology of science and intermedia art."
