We invite you to the premiere of the short experimental animated film Rooted in Code and a discussion with multimedia artist Nejc Trampuž, moderated by Vesna Bukovec (SCCA-Ljubljana/Postaja DIVA)!
The film takes place in the year 2057. In a polluted city, a permaculture garden flourishes on the roof of a skyscraper, tended by a robot gardener and an elderly botanist. Appealing to all ages, the film speculates on the degraded state of the environment, nature and the ecosystem in the future, but at the same time presents a utopian vision and solutions to the environmental crisis. It also brings into the equation a question of the impact artificial intelligence will have on our society, our daily lives and our environment.
When animating, the filmmaker Nejc Trampuž explored the capabilities of the rapidly evolving tools of generative artificial intelligence. Those are shaking up the social and artistic realms and entering the field of film production and gaming. The tools were used to generate elements of animation and sound, as well as to write the story, script and visual design of characters and scenes. He worked with the artist and sound designer Tim Kropivšek to create the audio, and the voice was performed by the actor and interpreter Blaž Šef. The production of the film was supported by a grant from the Ministry of Culture.

Nejc Trampuž
Nejc Trampuž (1993) through his short animated film Rooted in Code continues the practice of reflection on the social situation in relation to the environment and the ecosystem, which he has been actively engaged in for the last 7 years. The film refers processually to the projects of the past two years. Under the production platform konS, Trampuž carried out the project Another Future Entirely, in which for the first time he made extensive use of the tool of artificial intelligence reversing the logic of thinking about environmental issues from pessimism towards optimism and utopia. In a similar approach, he also developed the visuals created for the 2023 Statehood Day celebrations, which thematised Slovenia's relationship to the environment. Trampuž has exhibited at dozens of exhibitions and festivals in Slovenia and abroad, and has been a member of several juries, including the student section of Animateka 2017. He studied at ALUO, where he graduated cum laude and received his Master's degree with the academy's prize, and has received several other awards for his work. Nejc is also involved as an activist in the Youth for Climate Justice movement.
Vesna Bukovec
Vesna Bukovec (1977) graduated and received her MA in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. She is a socially critical artist who expresses herself in a variety of media, with drawing being her main focus, in addition to video. She has participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Slovenia and internationally. She also works in the field of graphic design and video art curation. Since 2015, she has been a professional collaborator of DIVA, the archive of artistic video, film and new media art at SCCA-Ljubljana.
